Pre-Requisites
There are no pre-requisites for the following training!
Basics
The following sections are just some of the hand tools in our shop. If there is a hand tool in the shop that is not on this, please talk to the mentors before using
Hand Drills
Hand Drills are the most utilized tool in the shop, they are used to install screws, drill holes, and much more. It is very important to make sure the drill is in the proper setting to accomplish the task at hand. The drill will need to be put in different settings for drilling a hole and setting in wood screws.
Watch this video about drills:
Shop storage
The drills are located in the middle drawer of the big husky (the long one). Note that the drills will not fit into the slots with the batteries on. Please take off the batteries and put the battery in the charger on the top of the big husky.
There is also a tap and drill chart poster located on the wall of the shop. Please see that for information regarding tap and hole sizes.
Tapping
Tapping is a way of cutting threads into a predrilled hole. There are different types of taps and it is critical that the proper tap is chosen. Thread designations are listed on the shank. Taps are extremely brittle and can break extremely easily.
Please read the entire article below for the basics on tapping:

Additionally, watch the following video on how to tap:
Video notes: Cutting fluid
Note in the video, they say cutting fluid is not needed for aluminum. In the Viperbots shop, you should always use cutting fluid for aluminum
Shop storage
The taps are located in a drawer in the big husky in a container labeled by the tap size.
Riveting
Riveting is a semi-permanent way of attaching materials. Rivets can be installed with a hand rivet gun or a pneumatic rivet gun. The latter is highly recommended to set rivets into place.
Please read the entire article that goes in-depth on how to rivet. How to Rivet, A guide
Note that our shop uses pneumatic rivet guns. Watch this YouTube video about pneumatic rivet guns:
Attaching the air hoses to the rivet gun may be a little difficult. Please watch the following video regarding air hose connectors:
Cleco Fasteners are used as temporary connectors. Learn how the Cleco Fastener works watching this video:
Shop storage
The pneumatic rivet guns are located in the little husky, in the bottom drawer. There are 4 rivet guns. Each rivet gun can be attached to the pneumatic air hoses hanging from the ceiling.
